Science fiction and fantasy are my main interests in life, God help me. There's no explaining it. You either love the stuff or you don't! I write character-based adventure stories. I don’t see the point in stories about people where nothing much happens, nor in stories where what happens is so much more important than who it happens to.
After six stand-alone novels, I'm in the midst of a series. To my great surprise the thing started to get huge reviews with Bright of the Sky, and has gone on from there. I wonder, does it have anything to do with the fact that it's sci-fantasy of sorts, not unadulterated SF? Or perhaps due to Stephan Martiniere's stunning cover art? You can drive yourself nuts trying to guess these things. My website introduces the Universe Entire: www.kaykenyon.com.
I live in Eastern Washington these days, after moving from the Seattle area. So I'm over the Cascade Mountains from Seattle--or the dark side--as we on the sunny side of the state call it.
Do I miss the big city? Nope! Mid-sized and small towns are the future, it seems to me. The internet makes it possible to live anywhere, be a lone eagle, and be in community. I can still get to the big city for film festivals and traffic jams. Seattle is 3 hours away.
I have a large orange cat who hates to do rewrites, and a husband who actually loves science fiction and is my first reader. The weather and topography here is great for my hobbies of motorcycling and hiking. I also like to teach writing and encourage writers; I founded the Write on the River conference in Wenatchee(www.writeontheriver.org). And I offer an e-newsletter on writing fiction, called Still Writing, because, through it all, I still am.
